If you’ve been reading my blogs over the years, you know I’m not a proponent of giving kids an allowance.
So, many times parents ask me how kids are supposed to learn to manage money without having any. My response…put them to work, like the rest of us!
I say that with a smile, but in all seriousness, there is always some type of small chore, regardless of age, that a child/teen can do and get paid for it.
Here’s a short list to give you ideas…age appropriate adjustments are obviously necessary. These are items you may be paying someone else to do, so consider paying your kids instead!
- Vacuum the house
- Dust the house
- Wash the car
- Detail the car
- Wash the windows (home)
- Mow lawn
- Weed yard/plant/rake leaves
- Find coupons and clip
- Scrub down bathroom sinks/tubs and toilets
- Home improvement project? Have them help!
This is just a start, but you get the idea. I believe this teaches our kids good work ethics and it also sends a message that it takes work to get paid.
